SUMMARY:Jonathan Harrington – 19th Century Magician
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Harrington (1811-1881) was one of the earliest American magicians. Born in Boston, Harrington began his performing career as a ventriloquist in 1826, and subsequently added fire resistance, conjuring, mimicry, and exhibitions to his performances, eventually focusing on magic. His success allowed him to purchase the New England Museum where he presented shows and exhibitions. Andrew Pinard transforms into Harrington to perform in both character and period costume to present mysteries and wonders from the nineteenth century with the help of audience members. This presentation on Jonathan Harrington will reveal new information about a performer that had an impact for decades after his passing, including a piece that Harrington likely performed, in costume and character.\nAndrew has been a working performer/presenter for 34 years. He has taught magic, performance, and design, and is the founder/curator of Hatbox Theatre which has presented over 1,100+ performances of 175+ productions for over 36,000+ patrons in a 100-seat venue since 2016 (transitioning to the 501(c)3 organization as Hatbox Theatre Association). Andrew served as the Executive Director of the Claremont Opera House from December 2020 through February 2023 before leaving to focus on performing/presenting. He has served since 2004 as Editor of The Yankee Magic Collector, a journal focused on the history of magic and allied arts.\n \n
